Huawei powers world's second largest off-grid solar plant in Bangladesh

The second largest off-grid solar power plant – 10 MW capacity – in the world is at Manpura, in the island district of Bhola, Bangladesh. One of the leading global ICT solution and equipment provider, Huawei’s Inverter and Energy Storage System (ESS) solutions has been used in this first off-grid solar plant of Bangladesh.

In the project, Huawei delivered a 100 MW Utility project for distribution to the national grid and Bangladesh's largest and first-ever micro grid with a 22 MWh ESS.

The world's second largest off-grid solar power plant is under construction at Manpura in the island district of Bhola. Around 90,000 people of the remote island of Manpura will get uninterrupted power in this power plant this year. The Rural Electrification Board (REB) is implementing a three-phase plan to distribute electricity to the country's off-grid areas.

3 MW of AC electricity will be directly used during the day by generating electricity in this off-grid solar power system of 10 MW capacity. The rest will be stored in the battery. A huge lithium ion battery bank will be installed for this purpose. Even if there is no sunlight at night or in fog, the stored electricity can be used for up to 24 hours.

If the production of solar power is disrupted due to continuous rain or fog during inclement weather, then diesel generators will be used to generate electricity as an alternative.

Huawei has been aiding Bangladesh in adopting a more efficient and eco-friendly energy source – with Huawei Digital Power Department's comprehensive product line, offering a range of solutions that cover residential, C&I, utility smart PV & ESS, and data centers.
